I bought one of the older versions of this a few years ago and absolutley loved it.
The old one required manual tuning. The new one is equally as great as far as drowning out the noise but I am not crazy about the tuning. You can preset channels but if you want to listen to others that are not preset it is kind of a pain to search. Also the AM band on the new set has a constant humming noise and is really hard to listen to. Since my father-in-law listens to AM more than I, I traded him the old version for the new version (his fathers day gift). Bad idea on my part. Still like the product as it does protect the hearing and the sound is pretty good. Would still recommend but if you can find the older version, go for it. Unless that is you are into the MP3, which I am not.
They muffle outside noise decently, however; the radio has lots of static at times and the speakers sound just awful when listening to an MP3 player. I found my $15 Skullcandy earbud headphones to block noise better and sound better as well.
Reception on the radio wasn't anything close to what my car radio gets, limiting me to about two of the dozen local stations. Radio finally stopped working altogether after about a year for no apparent reason, but MP3 player still works, which is fine. I had good luck with batteries when the radio was operational, lasted decently long periods of time. These are GREAT for protecting hearing (can still hear conversation well enough). I'm a woodworker, and my power equipment can be very LOUD, this solves the loudness problem and is quite comfortable.
The first problem I had with these WorkTunes occurred when I was ordering them. I had a pair of "PELTOR" WorkTunes. They lasted 5 years and handled a lot of abuse, so I wanted to get another pair of the same brand. When I searched for WorkTunes, these AO Safety WorkTunes came up. Well, they are not the same thing.
They are comfortable, and they provide adequate hearing protection from lawn equipment and power tools such as saws and grinders, but I want to listen to music at the same time and these WorkTunes have very poor radio reception. My previous pair had analog tuning and these are digital. The nice thing about digital is you can't accidentally change the channel by bumping into things, but to get an uninterrupted signal I found that you have to bend the antenna down, so I have had to glue the antenna down to get reception, and I can't even pick up my favorite channel that I used to be able to pick up with the previous pair.
I had read a review from someone stating this exact same problem, but I just thought they were simply too far away from the radio towers, but now I see that it's poor reception from the WorkTunes.
They are great and I use them every single day, but there is a radio tower right near my house and that particular radio station masks every other one because the electronics in the headphones are not good enough to pick up the other stations over it.
The reason I don't really care is that I can listen to my iPod with them, so I am usually the DJ.
All in all, great purchase for me, not to mention that the batteries last a LONG time.
SO far so good. I have really enjoyed using it and have had no problems. Happy with Amazon and the headphones. I have only had them for about three weeks. They make the three hours it takes to mow go much quicker.
Awesome product. Now I look forward to mowing the lawn. Bought this for my dad for fathers day, and now he loves mowing too.
Bilsom Radio Hi-Visibility Earmuffs w/ MP3 Input.....I wanted to tell everyone I found a GREAT and I mean the best ever AM/FM hearing protection radio I've found on the market today. I looked all over and read different reviews. They were hard to find since Amazon.com doesn't sell them. THEY SHOULD SELL THEM...THEY ARE THE BEST! First off the head phones are Bilsom Radio Hi-Visibility Earmuffs with AM/FM & MP3 Input. I searched the web and found the best price at a company I have never used before called [...]. I have an old pair of the Worktunes analog/dial tuned version. They worked OK but I didn't want to chance the digital because of the reviews. When I first put the Bilsom earmuffs on and turned on the radio, I couldn't believe the sound quality. It wasn't even close to my old Worktunes. This was like a quality radio. I was only able to receive a few stations with the Worktunes but with these I think I'm able to receive as many stations as my car radio. I've used them over a two week period, using the AM, FM and the ipod adapter. I wish there was a way I could convey to everyone that is thinking of purchasing another brand to,well, don't do it! There's nothing better out there. As you can tell I can't say enough good things about them except the color. The bright neon yellow isn't the best. They might sell one that is black but the reviews I read were about the yellow ones so that's why I purchased those. They seem to weight the same as my Worktunes and the earmuffs get just as hot as the Worktunes. So far I've used them for doing the yard work (mower, blower and cutter) and various woodworking machines (table saw, planer, bandsaw) in the garage.
My family got these for me for farther's day and I use them all the time while mowing and operating my tractor. They get quite good reception in my rural area and the battery life has been far more than the specifications promoted. They are good hearing protection even without the radio.
Purchased as a gift. Was greatly appreciated. I previously had purchased an analog model. Now I wish mine would fail so that I could purchase a digital version for my self. But it just keeps working.
