I've had the trimmer for a couple of months now and simply love it! Philips Norelco thought of all the elements that make up a great beard trimmer and put them into a low cost product.
1. It needs no sharpening.
2. It needs no special oils for lubricating.
3. It has an integrated vacuum that pulls out more than 90% of the mess!
4. It's easy to clean.
5. It's easy to adjust trimming height.
6. It has a narrow head for fine trimming.
7. Charge lasted for > 1 month of trimming every other day.
8. Reasonably quest unless you turn on the turbo vacuum, which I only use with the narrow trimming tool.
Did I mention that it doesn't leave the bathroom sink full of hair trimmings?
Had this for about 2 years now and its pretty good. It has a nice vacuum feature but some hairs still escape the vacuum, but it's beats cleaning up the entire sink! What I like most about it is the option to plug in to AC directly and not have to wait for the charge.
Probably the best trimmer out there from what I researched. Two years later still don't have the same features for new trimmers.
Buy one.
Closest setting is really short, like a stubble slightly longer than average 5 o'clock shadow. Like a second day length for me. Still drops a few trimmings on regular mode but not much. So far its perfect for keeping an even tamed beast on my mug.
I bought this mainly to use on my beard, which grows quickly. Overall, I like it. It's not the best (most powerful) trimmer I've ever had, but its other features make up for what it lacks in power.
The adjustable comb is easy to use and I don't have to dig through the drawer in the bathroom to find a snap-on #3 comb I like to use and therefore always lose. The vacuum feature is nice and makes cleaning up small jobs easier, especially since I don't have to sweep hair off a wet sink afterwards. Cleaning is straightforward as all the pieces come apart and go back together pretty easily. The turbo feature is also helpful. My beard is very coarse, and tends to jam up most trimmers. This one gets hung up sometimes, but if I go slowly and don't try to cut too much at once, it works fine.
One note: The hair "reservoir" under the vacuum fills up quickly, so it's better to use this more often on smaller jobs than waiting to do a bigger trim.
I'm happy with it. It shaves much better than the cheap ($17 at Target) Weil beard trimmer I used to use. I'm happy with the results of the trim. I use the #5 setting for a nice short trimmed beard look -- more than stubble, but not a long beard. I like the smooth look it gives, not splotchy or patchy. No, the vacuum doesn't pick up everything, but it makes clean up much much less bothersome than the old trimmer I used.
And for the record, the battery in mine is NiMH, not NiCd, so I'm quite pleased about that. The manual specifically says that it's NiMH. So those of you that got the old fashioned NiCad batteries, they've updated it since then.
Works great! This replaces my old Norelco trimmer of 5 years. Gets most of the clippings making cleanup a breeze.
Been using the T980 for a few weeks now and it works great! The price and free shipping made for a good deal. Also holds a charge quite well and so far very happy with it.
I bought this to replace my Remington MB400 trimmer which I really liked. Unfortunately, after years of use, the battery will no longer hold a charge for more then a couple minutes. That's unfortunate because the titanium blades still cut well. I liked the MB400, because it gave me a close stuble shave, its vacuum worked well and it stood upright, taking up less space on my small sink. Since this model is no longer available, (I would have bought it again), and since Remington, no longer offers a vacuum trimmer for some odd reason, I had to look elsewhere.
I was somewhat reluctant to buy the Norelco T980, because I had Norelco rotary razor years ago which I hated. However, I chalked that up to not liking the rotary system and this trimmer had some good reviews.
The trimmer is a sleek black color, comes with a carrying case, and in general looks well built. The battery much to its credit also holds a charge well. I've used it multiple times and I still haven't had to recharge it yet.
The trimmer has been a disappoint overall though, mainly because unlike my previous trimmer it does not provide a close stuble shave. This may be a non issue for some buyers if they are only looking to trim longer hair, however it is a critical issue for me as I tend to use my trimmer as my primary shaver, and keep a seperate foil shaver for days I need a cleaner shave. This trimmer simply does not cut close enough with either of the provided heads. The smaller trimmer head also cuts rough and felt more uncomfortable.
The vacuum works well, but the blue collection piece gets in the way when shaving, and also causes the vacuum to miss some. The plastic collection door on front front flips open, but stays hinged and thus gets in the way, when you are trying to empty hair.
The blue turbo button on front changes the whir of the motor, but I didn't notice any difference in shave.
Overall, this is probably a decent to good trimmer for longer hair lengths, but if you are looking for anything nearing a close shave, avoid this model.
I will be getting a different model due to the closeness issue.
The Philips T980 trimmer is excellent. The best feature is the adjustable trimmer length - no need to change guides. Simple and efficient.
As an Afican American man I needed something to shave at a stubble level to avoid in-grown hairs. This, on setting 1, does the trick. And the vacuum feature cuts down on cleanup!
